US market entry a go-to-market plan for UK B2B companies

The US is the UK's largest trading partner, worth 17.4% of total UK trade in the year to March 2026.

For a UK B2B company it is usually the biggest market you can sell into in English, and the one that punishes a vague plan fastest.

GTM Quest is a London GTM agency that builds pipeline for UK and US teams.

This guide covers what a market entry consultant does and what a GTM agency does, then the decisions in order: US ICP, first metros, entity and tax signposts, US email and privacy rules, dollar pricing, time zones, and what to run from London before you hire in the US.

London and New York share roughly three and a half working hours a day. Most UK companies prove US demand from London inside that window before they hire in the US.

01/ the starting point

What US market entry means for a UK B2B company and why most of it is go-to-market

For a B2B company, US market entry is the work of finding which American buyers want what you sell, reaching them, closing them in dollars and serving them across an ocean.

The legal set-up matters, but it is rarely what decides success.

Pipeline does.

The opportunity is real and mostly services.

UK exports to the US were £203.3 billion in the four quarters to the end of Q1 2026, and £146.7 billion of that, or 72.2%, was services.

The largest category, which the ONS calls "other business services", was worth £61.3 billion.

Much of it is sold from the UK.

The same DBT factsheet shows that in 2023 74.1% of UK services exports to the US were delivered cross-border (Mode 1), with no one travelling.

That is the case for testing the US from London before you open an office.

The official UK guide is blunt about the catch: the US is a federal system, and you will need to treat each state as a separate entity with its own procedures and regulations.

That applies to tax, privacy law and, in practice, to how you pick your first market.

02/ before you start

Are you ready for the US? five checks before you spend

None of these needs a US entity or a US hire.

If you cannot answer them, a US budget will mostly buy you lessons.

01

A repeatable UK motion

You can say which segment buys, why it buys and how long it takes, from deals you have won without the founder in every meeting.

  • ✓ Win rate by segment
  • ✓ Typical sales cycle
  • ✓ Who signs

02

Inbound US interest already

Look at your CRM, website analytics and LinkedIn followers.

US companies that already found you are your first evidence and your first list.

03

A product that works for US buyers

US date formats, dollar billing, US data hosting where buyers ask for it, and security reviews such as SOC 2 if your buyers expect them.

04

A named owner

One person who owns US pipeline, even part time.

Shared ownership across the UK sales team usually means nobody works US hours.

05

Customers who will vouch for you

US buyers ask for US references.

Two UK customers with US operations count for more than ten UK logos.

Not sure where you stand?

Try the GTM scorecard first.

03/ who to sell to

Rebuild your ICP for the US do not copy the UK one across

Your UK ideal customer profile is a starting hypothesis, not a US list.

Re-test each part of it against US buyers before you build a single campaign.

Company size. A US company with the same headcount often has a larger budget and a more specialised team.

A role that is one generalist in Manchester can be three people in Chicago.

Expect more stakeholders and a procurement or security step you did not see at home.

Titles. "Director" and "VP" mean different things in US companies.

Many US firms use VP for heads of function well below the C-suite, so a UK "head of" maps more often to a US director or VP.

Search on function and seniority together, not on the UK title.

Triggers. The best US accounts are the ones showing a reason to buy now: funding, a new leader in the buying role, hiring for the problem you solve, or expansion into a market you know.

This is where signal-based selling earns its keep, because it lets a small London team focus on the few hundred accounts that matter.

Proof. Write the US ICP from UK customers that also operate in the US and US companies already in your pipeline, then build the GTM strategy around it.

04/ where to start

Which states and metros first? pick by where your buyers cluster

The US is too big to launch everywhere.

Pick one metro, or one time zone, where your ICP is dense and your proof is strongest.

These are judgement calls for common B2B profiles, not rankings.

Who is your best-fit US buyer?

New York

Start in New York

The densest concentration of financial services, media and agency buyers, and the easiest time zone from London.

Many UK companies put their first US person here.

  • ✓ Eastern time: five hours behind London most of the year
  • ✓ Direct flights from London every day
  • ✓ Expensive to hire in

See our page on New York GTM agencies.

If you will run US outreach from London, the time zone matters as much as the sector.

An Eastern or Central time start lets one team cover the US in the afternoon.

A West Coast start usually needs a US hire sooner.

05/ signposts, not advice

Entity, tax and visas what to ask, and where the official answers are

This is a list of questions to take to a US accountant and lawyer, with the official pages to read first.

It is not legal or tax advice.

The UK government says you will need tailored advice from a certified accountant or tax lawyer.

QuestionWhat to knowWhere to check
Do we need a US company to start selling? Many UK firms sell to US customers from the UK entity at first. Our advice on sequence, not on law: do not let incorporation become the project.

A US company with no US meetings is a cost, not a market entry.

06/ outreach rules

US email, calling and privacy rules how they differ from PECR and UK GDPR

US rules on B2B outreach are not stricter than the UK in every respect, but they are different, and some carry large per-message penalties.

Summaries below link the regulator; check with counsel for your case.

RuleWhat it saysWhat it means for UK outbound
CAN-SPAM Act (federal, email)The FTC says the law makes no exception for business-to-business email. Each separate email in violation can carry penalties of up to $53,088.Truthful headers and subject lines, a postal address, a working opt-out, and opt-outs honoured within 10 business days. You answer for agencies sending on your behalf.
CCPA / CPRA (California)Applies to for-profit businesses that do business in California and meet a threshold. The revenue threshold is now $26,625,000, or buying, selling or sharing the data of 100,000 or more California residents or households. The B2B and employee exemptions expired on 31 December 2022, so US business contacts count. Many UK scale-ups will be under the threshold at first; check, do not assume.
Other state privacy lawsState-level privacy law is moving quickly; the IAPP keeps a state privacy legislation tracker.Review it before you scale data enrichment, and again each year.
TCPA and Do Not Call (phone)The FCC says the TCPA restricts telemarketing calls and automatic dialling systems and prerecorded voice messages, and the National Do Not Call Registry applies to interstate and intrastate calls.Manual, one-to-one calls to business numbers are the safe default. Do not use auto-dialers or prerecorded voicemail drops without legal advice.
For comparison: UK PECRThe ICO says you can email any corporate body without specific consent, but must not hide your identity and must give a valid opt-out address. The habits are similar: identify yourself, make opting out easy, keep a suppression list. The US adds a postal address requirement and much larger fines.

UK GDPR still applies to data you process in the UK, including US contacts in your UK CRM.

Write one data policy that meets both sets of rules.

If you work with an outbound partner, ask how they handle CAN-SPAM, suppression and enrichment sources before you sign.

Our outbound agencies page lists what to check.

07/ pricing

Price in dollars, not converted pounds US list prices, US packaging

Set a US price list in dollars, with round numbers that make sense to a US buyer.

A price that reads as a currency conversion tells the buyer you are a UK company testing the water, and invites a discount conversation.

Do not just change the currency symbol.

Check what US competitors charge, how they package it (per seat, usage or platform fee) and what buyers expect included, such as onboarding.

Remember sales tax.

The UK guide notes that sales tax varies from state to state; price lists should say whether tax is included, and your billing system should be able to add it where it applies.

08/ time zones

Time zones and working hours how much of the US you can cover from London

The overlap is arithmetic from official UTC offsets, assuming both offices work 9am to 5.30pm local time.

It decides who can run US calls from London and who cannot.

US zoneBehind London (most of the year)Shared office hours (London time)Covered from London?
Eastern (New York, Boston, Atlanta)5 hours (UTC-5 standard)2pm to 5.30pmYes, in the afternoon
Central (Chicago, Dallas, Austin)6 hours (UTC-6 standard)3pm to 5.30pmYes, with some late calls
Pacific (San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles)8 hours (three hours behind Eastern)5pm to 5.30pmNot without a late shift or a US hire

Watch the clock-change weeks. The UK goes back to GMT on 25 October 2026; the US does not end daylight saving time until 1 November 2026.

For that week New York is four hours behind, not five.

In spring, US daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday of March and the UK changes on 28 March 2027, so the gap shrinks again for about two weeks.

Calendar tools handle this; people booking by hand often do not.

09/ who does what

What to run from London and what to hire locally the split that keeps cost down

Most of the go-to-market system can be built and run in London.

A few things need someone in the US.

Pick a function to compare.

Run from LondonHire in the US
Account lists and signalsBuilt in Clay and your CRM; location does not matterNo advantage
Email sequencesSent in US mornings by schedule; replies handled in the afternoon overlapFaster replies to West Coast prospects
Cold callsPossible for Eastern and Central time in the London afternoonNeeded for Pacific time and high call volumes

→ Lists, signals and sequences belong in London. Calls to the West Coast need a US-based SDR or an outbound agency with US callers.

The BLS figures are median annual wages for all US employers in each occupation, not a quote for your hire.

Benefits and employer payroll taxes are extra, and pay plans vary.

10/ the sequence

A phased US market entry what shows you are ready for the next step

Each phase has a signal that tells you to move on.

Skipping a phase is how UK companies end up with a US office and no US pipeline.

The signal

11/ who to hire

Market entry consultant or GTM agency? different jobs, sometimes both

A market entry consultant answers whether and how to enter.

A GTM agency builds and runs the pipeline once you have decided.

Pick the question you need answered.

What do you need most right now?

Market entry consultant

Hire a market entry consultant

A market entry consultant researches market size, competitors, regulation and entry models, then recommends a plan.

Good ones also cover entity, tax and hiring with partner firms.

  • ✓ Market sizing and competitor review
  • ✓ Entry model: sell from UK, partner, subsidiary
  • ✓ Regulatory and set-up checklist

Ask for a fixed scope and a fixed fee. Compare firms on our GTM consultant page.

Many UK companies use both: a consultant for a few weeks to decide, then a GTM agency for months to prove it.

The mistake is spending the budget on the report and none on running the plan.

12/ due diligence

How to choose a US market entry partner questions and red flags

Ask

Questions for any consultant or agency

Good partners answer with named examples and specifics, not frameworks.

  • ✓ Which UK companies have you helped into the US, and what happened next?
  • ✓ Who on your team works US hours?
  • ✓ How do you handle CAN-SPAM, opt-outs and enrichment data?
  • ✓ What will we have after 90 days that we did not have before?
  • ✓ When would you tell us to hire in the US instead of paying you?

Avoid

Red flags

Any one of these is a reason to slow down.

  • ✓ Starts with incorporation and office space, not buyers
  • ✓ Promises a number of meetings before seeing your ICP
  • ✓ Sends from domains and tools you do not control
  • ✓ No answer on US privacy and email rules
  • ✓ A long fixed contract with no review point

13/ our service

How GTM Quest helps UK companies enter the US the pipeline system, run from London

We are not a legal or tax firm, and we do not set up US companies.

We build and run the go-to-market system that proves US demand: the US ICP and account lists, signal-led outbound built on Clay, LinkedIn content and ads for US buyers, and the CRM and RevOps to report it weekly.

We work from London across the afternoon overlap with Eastern and Central time, which suits Phases 1 and 2 above.

Everything lives in accounts you own, so when you make your first US hire they inherit a working system, not a spreadsheet.
