ABM consultant account-based marketing

An ABM consultant is a specialist in account-based marketing: the B2B practice of choosing a short list of named companies and coordinating marketing and sales to win them.

(Not the facilities company with the same initials.) A consultant designs the program, chooses the accounts, sets up the data and plays, and teaches your team to run it.

GTM Quest is a London GTM agency that builds account-based pipeline systems for US and UK teams.

This page covers what an account-based marketing consultant does, how the role compares with an agency, an in-house ABM manager and a fractional leader, what consultants publish as prices, when ABM is worth it, and how to vet one before you sign.

01/ the definition

What is an ABM consultant? and what account-based marketing means

An ABM consultant is an independent specialist, or a small firm, hired to design or fix an account-based marketing program.

Account-based marketing (ABM) means picking a finite list of target companies and treating each one, or each small cluster, as a market of its own: research, messaging, ads, outreach and sales follow-up all aimed at the same named accounts.

The term was formalized by ITSMA, which says that in 2003 it "formalized and promoted ABM".

ITSMA, now Momentum ITSMA and part of Accenture Song, still runs the best-known ABM benchmark studies and certification.

Most consultants are hired for a defined piece of work: a readiness audit, a pilot, an account selection model, a stack review or a playbook.

Some stay on a monthly advisory retainer.

The difference from an ABM agency is that a consultant mostly designs and advises, while an agency also runs the campaigns.

ABM consultant vs ABM specialist

"ABM specialist" is usually a job title for an in-house practitioner who runs campaigns, lists and platforms day to day.

An ABM consultant is external and usually more senior: they design the program the specialist runs.

Many consultants were in-house ABM leads before going independent.

Why buying groups changed the job

ABM exists because B2B deals are bought by committees.

Gartner found buying groups range from five to 16 people across as many as four functions.

Forrester's 2026 study says the typical decision now includes 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers.

A consultant's core skill is reaching that group, not one lead.

02/ the work

What does an ABM consultant do? six jobs, in the order they happen

The scope varies by engagement, but a complete account-based marketing consulting project touches all six.

If a proposal skips account selection or measurement, ask why.

01

Account selection and tiering

Build the target list from fit (industry, size, tech stack, region) and evidence (closed-won patterns, signals).

Then split it into tiers that get different levels of investment.

  • βœ“ Ideal customer profile from won deals
  • βœ“ Account scoring model
  • βœ“ One-to-one, one-to-few, one-to-many tiers

02

Buying-group mapping

For each account or tier, define the roles that decide, influence and block, then find the real people in them and load them into the CRM against the account.

  • βœ“ Buying roles by product
  • βœ“ Contact coverage per account
  • βœ“ Account and contact hierarchy in CRM

03

Intent and signal data

Decide which signals mean an account is moving: hiring, funding, tech changes, leadership moves, website visits, third-party intent.

Then wire those signals into prioritization.

  • βœ“ Signal definitions and sources
  • βœ“ Scoring and alerts
  • βœ“ A weekly "accounts in motion" list

04

Content and plays

Write the messaging for each tier and design the plays: the sequence of ads, outreach, content, events and executive contact that moves an account from unaware to opportunity.

  • βœ“ Account or cluster value propositions
  • βœ“ Play library by stage
  • βœ“ Channel plan and budget

05

Sales alignment

Agree target accounts, handoff rules and follow-up expectations with sales leadership.

ABM fails when marketing warms an account and nobody in sales calls.

  • βœ“ Shared account list and owners
  • βœ“ Service-level agreement on follow-up
  • βœ“ Joint weekly account review

06

Measurement

Replace lead counts with account metrics: coverage, engagement, opportunities created, pipeline, win rate and deal size in the target list versus outside it.

  • βœ“ Account engagement score
  • βœ“ Pipeline and win rate by tier
  • βœ“ Dashboard in your CRM

For the operating detail of running these six jobs week to week, see our account-based marketing strategy guide.

This page is about hiring the person who designs them.

03/ tiers

One-to-one, one-to-few and one-to-many what the consultant designs for each

Momentum ITSMA teaches three ABM approaches in its certification: One-to-One, One-to-Few and One-to-Many.

The account counts below are examples, not a standard.

TierAccounts (for example)What the consultant designsWhat drives the cost
One-to-one (strategic)A handful of very large existing or target accountsAn account plan per company, executive engagement, bespoke content, joint planning with the account teamResearch depth and custom content per account
One-to-few (ABM lite)Clusters of 5 to 15 similar accountsCluster messaging by industry or use case, tailored plays, shared assets with light personalizationNumber of clusters and assets
One-to-many (programmatic)Hundreds or thousands of accountsScoring, signal-led prioritization, ads to account lists, automated outreach and reportingData, tools and media spend

Most companies start with one-to-many or one-to-few, because one-to-one needs large deal sizes to pay back.

A good ABM consultant tells you which tier your deal economics support before designing anything.

Row one is the targeting work: ICP, account tiers and buying groups. Row two is the motion: signals that show which accounts are moving, plays aimed at them, and pipeline measured by account.

04/ compare

05/ cost

How much does an ABM consultant cost? published prices only

Most ABM consultants and agencies do not publish prices.

These are the ones that do, each on its own website, checked on October 18, 2026.

Each is that firm’s starting price, not a market average.

Two patterns stand out.

Fixed-scope audits and foundations start around $5,000 to $10,000; full program design or a pilot runs from $25,000 (Iron Horse) to Β£30,000 (connectedABM).

Monthly retainers range from $2,000 for a light HubSpot-based program to $10,000 or more for senior advisory.

For example: HubSpot's ABM service is $4,500 for up to 12 hours, which works out at $375 an hour of consultant time.

Forefront's advisory retainer at $10,000 a month is $120,000 a year, more than Salary.com's $101,599 average for an in-house ABM manager, before that manager's benefits and tools.

For a broader comparison, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for marketing managers at $166,790 (May 2025).

Platform licences (intent data, ad platforms, enrichment) and media spend are almost always extra to a consultant's fee.

06/ pricing

What drives the price of ABM consulting five variables to fix before you get quotes

Tier. One-to-one work is research-heavy and priced per account.

One-to-many is priced on data, tooling and build time.

Ask for a quote per tier, not a single blended figure.

Number of segments. Iron Horse prices its program per market segment.

Every extra industry or region means new messaging, new lists and new plays.

Who executes. A design-only engagement is cheaper than one where the consultant also builds the ads, sequences and dashboards.

Be clear which you are buying.

Stack state. If the CRM is full of duplicates and lead-only records, the first month goes on data.

Motion ABX lists clean accounts in HubSpot or Salesforce as a fit condition for its fixed-price audit.

Seniority. A former head of ABM at an enterprise software company charges more than a generalist marketer who added ABM to their services last year.

Ask who will actually do the work.

07/ the decision

Is ABM worth it for you? pick the line that fits

ABM pays back when a small number of accounts can produce a large share of revenue.

It wastes money when deals are small or the market is too broad to name.

Which describes your business?

Good fit

ABM is likely worth it

You sell high-value contracts to a market you could list in a spreadsheet, and you have sellers who can work named accounts.

This is where an ABM consultant earns the fee.

  • βœ“ Deal sizes that justify research per account
  • βœ“ A few hundred to a few thousand target companies
  • βœ“ Sales willing to agree a shared list

Momentum ITSMA reports 84% of programs see pipeline growth, from practitioners already running ABM.

The timing case for ABM is strong in complex sales.

6sense found the winning vendor was on the buyer’s day-one shortlist 95% of the time, so being known to the right accounts before they start buying matters more than being found later.

08/ honest advice

When ABM is not worth it five situations where it fails

Sales will not work the list. If sales leadership will not agree target accounts and follow up on engaged ones, ABM becomes expensive advertising.

Momentum ITSMA names the relationship with sales among the most common ABM challenges.

You are buying a platform, not a program. A consultant brought in only to justify or configure an intent-data platform will configure it.

The account selection, plays and sales process still need designing.

Nobody will run it after the consultant leaves. A plan with no owner stops within a quarter.

Budget for an ABM manager, an agency or a fractional lead before the engagement ends.

You need results this quarter. ABM works on account timelines.

HubSpot's own ABM service asks customers to be prepared to invest in ABM returns in 8 to 18 months.

If you need meetings now, start with outbound.

The data is not ready. Without accounts and contacts linked in your CRM, nobody can measure account engagement.

Fix the CRM first, or hire a consultant who will do that as phase one.

09/ the stack

The ABM tools you will hear about named, linked, not ranked

An ABM consultant should be tool-agnostic and able to run a pilot on your existing stack.

These are the tools you will hear most.

Each description is what the vendor says about its own product.

For one-to-many ABM, a CRM, Clay and LinkedIn ads cover a lot before you need an enterprise intent platform.

See the GTM tech stack and signal-based selling.

10/ credentials

ABM certifications worth asking about what exists and what it costs

The best-known independent credential is the ITSMA Account-Based Marketing Certification from Momentum ITSMA.

The current program is priced at $5,900, takes up to 42 hours and ends with a real-world plan submission.

Momentum ITSMA issues a "Momentum ITSMA ABM Certified" badge when a mentor approves the candidate's ABM plan.

There is also an entry-level ABM Fundamentals course at $2,500 and about 11 hours.

ITSMA says it has certified more than 3,000 marketers.

The ABM Leadership Alliance is a community with research, frameworks and events, founded with Demandbase and ForgeX among its members.

We could not find a certification on its site, so treat any claim of "ABMLA certified" as something to check.

Platform vendors also run their own training; that shows tool skill, not program design.

A certificate is a useful filter, not a guarantee.

A consultant with no certificate and three documented pilots with pipeline numbers is a better hire than one with a badge and no results.

11/ hiring

How to hire an ABM consultant six steps

  1. 01

    Write the outcome first

What should be true in 90 days? For example: a tiered list of 300 accounts agreed with sales, buying groups mapped for the top 50, two plays live, and an account dashboard in the CRM.

    SCOPE
  2. 02

    Pick the tier and segment

Decide whether you are starting with one-to-one, one-to-few or one-to-many, and in which segment. This sets the price more than anything else.

    FOCUS
  3. 03

    Check your data and stack

Are accounts and contacts linked in the CRM? Do you have ad accounts and a way to track engagement? Share this up front so quotes are comparable.

    READINESS
  4. 04

Ask for a diagnosis, not a pitch

Share closed-won data under NDA and ask each candidate how they would choose the first accounts. How they reason tells you more than their deck.

    ASSESS
  5. 05

    Check references from sales leaders

Ask a former client’s head of sales, not only the marketer, whether ABM changed how they worked accounts.

    REFERENCES
  6. 06

Contract for a pilot and a handover

A fixed-scope pilot with written success metrics, a named owner on your side, and a playbook and training as deliverables.

Questions to ask before you sign and the red flags

Ask

Questions for every candidate

Good consultants answer with specifics from past programs.

  • βœ“ How would you choose and tier our first accounts?
  • βœ“ Which metrics would you report at 30, 90 and 180 days?
  • βœ“ How do you get sales to agree the list and follow up?
  • βœ“ Which signals have actually predicted pipeline in your past work?
  • βœ“ Can you run the pilot on our current stack?
  • βœ“ Tell me about an ABM program that did not work. Why?
  • βœ“ Who on your side does the work, and how many clients do they have?
  • βœ“ What do we own at the end: lists, plays, dashboards, playbook?

Avoid

Red flags

Any one of these is a reason to slow down.

  • βœ“ Recommends a six-figure platform before seeing your data
  • βœ“ Reports impressions and clicks, not account engagement and pipeline
  • βœ“ No plan for involving sales from week one
  • βœ“ Undisclosed reseller fees or referral payments from vendors
  • βœ“ Quotes ROI multiples with no source
  • βœ“ Cannot explain the difference between the three ABM tiers
  • βœ“ Wants a 12-month lock-in with no exit after the pilot

If a consultant quotes a striking ABM statistic, ask for the source page.

Many widely shared ABM figures cannot be traced to a primary study; the benchmarks on this page each link to the publisher.
